ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Throughout the 5-year apprenticeship program, employees should learn the skills and abilities necessary to complete the following:
- Install, repair and maintain all types of fixed extinguishing systems.
- Install and service a variety of other fire protection equipment such as standpipes, carbon dioxide systems, halon systems, foam systems and dry chemical systems.
- Comply with union collective bargaining agreement.
- Recognize hazards on the job and understand how to deal with them properly.
- Practice proper care and use of pipe wrenches, vises, pipe cutters, reamers, power equipment, tools for fabricating tubes, layout/measuring tools, screw drivers, pliers, hammers, saws, filed, punches, chisels, drills/bores, screw threads, ladders, scaffolds and hoists.
- Read blueprints, multi-view drawings, size and location dimensions, scales, sketches, isometric drawings, and sprinkler-piping drawings.
- Recognize causes of failure of sprinkler systems and be able to ensure our sprinkler systems operate properly.
- Operate a TI-36x calculator to solve problems of sprinkler system installation.
- Understand and adhere to all NFPA regulations regarding design, installation, testing of systems, and piping.
- Understand the construction, operation, water distribution, discharge capacities, temperature rating, life, corrosion, and maintenance of automatic sprinklers.
- Recognize various types of sprinkler water supply, fire pumps, gravity tanks, pressure tanks, and embankment tanks.
- Have knowledge of tank foundations, pipe connections, fittings, heating equipment, vertical-shaft turbine pumps, electric and engine valve controls, and diesel engine drives.
- Understand all types of fire protection systems including wet-pipe systems, antifreeze solutions, dry-pipe systems, pre-action and deluge systems, combined sprinkler standpipe systems, foam-water systems, and both high and low-pressure carbon dioxide systems.
- Work with and understand all components of sprinkler system hydraulics including pressure, total force, specific gravity, specific density, pressure generation, flow rate, sprinkler system design, pressure losses, and calculated systems.
- Be familiar with sprinkler system alarm components including alarm check-valve and retarding chambers, waterflow indicators, alarms for dry-pipe, pre-action and deluge systems, waterflow switches, water motor alarms, protective signaling systems, and fire-sensitive devices.
- Fill out written reports including accident reports, daily time reports, and material reports.
- Complete all training coursework assigned in professional and efficient manner.
- Learn NFPA 13,17,17A, and 25 regulations over the course of the 5-year program.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS

- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, mechanical, piping, and/or construction is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
- Ability to lift up to at least 75 pounds required.
- Willing to climb ladders and use aerial lifts; with or without reasonable accommodation required.
- Strong mechanical background is a plus.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment required.
- Ability to travel to job sites required.
- Proven knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (i.e. Word, Access, and particularly Excel.)

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical strength rating is classified as very hard work which entails exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force, 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Environmental conditions of this position are extremely wide ranging including inside, outside, extreme hot, extreme cold, fumes, odors, toxic conditions, dust poor ventilation, hazards, humid, loud noises, vibrations, and wet. This position frequently requires protective equipment for arms, eyes, feet, head, and hearing. Occasionally requiring protective equipment for full body, leg, respirator, and skin. The employee will need to understand simple math, simple drawings, technical instructions, layout work, and simple memos. Operation of a hand tools (manual and power), a telephone, and shop machinery are required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to commute to customer and company locations by land and air.
